Frequently asked questions

What is a Speech and Language Therapist?

A Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is trained to provide a detailed assessment of communication skills. They work with the person and those important to them to maximise their skills and support individuals to reach their communication potential . SLTs work with both children and adults. Increasingly SLT’s are working more indirectly for example providing and running training, writing and publishing books and developing apps.

Why is my child’s communication delayed?

There can be many reasons why your child’s communication skills are not developing as expected. Some children have a specific delay in their communication, others have an underlying condition effecting their communication or overall development. A detailed assessment from Chatty Children SLT can help to explain if and why your child’s skills are delayed.

Can my child access NHS and private Speech and Language Therapy?

Yes, children can access both NHS and private Speech and Language Therapy. It is best practice that professionals involved work together with your child and family. Chatty Children Speech Therapy will ask your permission before sharing information.

Where do sessions happen?

Sessions happen in environments familiar to your child. This can include your home, child’s school or nursery.

Do I need to be present in sessions?

During the initial assessment parents need to be present as part of the process. In therapy ideally a parent or member of the educational staff would be present. This supports therapy to be continued between sessions.

How long will you work with my child?

This is dependent on your child’s needs and progress. Support can vary from assessment and advice, to short or long term therapy.
